The photograph

Making the photograph

During the 2017 total solar eclipse, climber Tommy Smith moved into position at Smith Rock as the sun and moon aligned behind him.

Making the photograph took months of planning, careful scouting and a team working together around a moment none of us could repeat. It brings together things I’ve always been drawn to: physics, mountains and the possibility of seeing something differently.

A real alignment, captured in camera.
