The story

On a voyage through the Kuril Islands, marine biologist Vladimir Burkanov brings the expedition into the world he has spent his life studying and protecting. Directed by Taylor Rees with co-director and cinematographer Renan Ozturk, the documentary finds its center in a person as compelling as the volcanic landscape around him.

A story that unfolded at sea

The film moves through a remote island chain and its extraordinary marine life, following Burkanov’s work among sea-lion colonies. His relationship with the islands turns an adventure into a story about attention, responsibility and conservation.

Part of the camera team

Ted contributed additional cinematography, assistant-camera work and data management alongside Ozturk. It was a supporting role within a larger filmmaking team, combining work behind the camera with the practical demands of an expedition production.
