The story

Voluntariosa means strong-willed, the word Sara’s family uses to describe her. Directed and photographed by Ted, the documentary follows her through chronic injury, amputation and a return to the mountains, then into her work helping other Ecuadorian amputees access prosthetic care.

The work

  • Interviews and expedition cinematography
  • A character-led film for the Range of Motion Project

A person, beyond the milestone

Sara’s story extends beyond an ascent. The film follows her determination to make decisions about her own body and future, with the mountains becoming one part of a larger account of independence and possibility.

The work continues in Quito

At the time of the film, Sara worked with the Range of Motion Project at its Quito clinic. That everyday work connects her personal experience with the wider question of who gets access to the care that makes mobility possible.
